Pacquiao Wins Over Algieri in WBO Welterweight Boxing Match
Filipino boxing icon, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against American boxer Chris Algieri last November 23, 2014 at the Macau Cotai Arena.
This match was highly anticipated by boxing fans because Pacquiao will be returning to the ring after a long hiatus. Millions of fans all over the world watched the match live, via pay per view or via television telecast.
From the beginning of the match, a lot of people speculated that Pacquiao will be successful in defending his title especially after Algieri went down at least six times over the course of the 12-round boxing match.
The American boxer Algieri, who is the undefeated WBO light welterweight champion, proved to be no match for Pacman especially after he was knocked down in the second round. After his first knockdown, Algieri also went down to the canvas twice in the sixth and ninth rounds, and again in the tenth round.
After being knocked down several times, Algieri tried to run and hide from the powerful and quick punches of Pacquiao but the latter proved to be a very dominant opponent, releasing strong and swift punches. However, it was very commendable that the American boxer survived twelve rounds.
The final score cards of the judges’ show 119-103, 120-102, 119-103, all in favor of Manny Pacquiao, making him the victor by win of unanimous decision.
Pacquiao stated after the match that he was very happy and satisfied with the way he handled the bout. He also added that at first he wanted to go for a knockout but Algieri was very fast and kept escaping from his punches.
