How to Rekindle Your Love for Your Job

On a Monday morning, you’ll likely find me rushing around my flat as my mind races with ideas and projects that I’m dying to work on to. I’m that in love with my job. After a few years, however, something changed. I started waking up and wondering if this is really what I want to do for the rest of my life. That thought lasted for several months – but fortunately, I was able to regain my passion for my work. How did I managed to do it? Here’s how:

  1. Have a Break

The feeling of hating our work often sneaks up on us when we feel burned out. An easy way to avoid experiencing workplace fatigue is to take breaks. Start small by eating lunch far from your desk several times a week. If you still have enough work leave to use, take a few days off and have the dream vacation you’ve always wanted to have. Doing this will surely recharge you for the work days to come.

  1. Take on New Responsibilities

Job boredom often sets in when you’ve already mastered your current task and aren’t challenged on a daily basis. In case this happens, consider exploring opportunities or learning new skills that will stimulate you. If you want, you can also ask your boss to have you work on a project that you’ve always been interested in. This will allow you to take on new responsibilities without completely shifting from your current role.

  1. Start a Part-Time Job

Starting a side hustle is also a good option, especially if you have a passion or interest outside of your job that you’ve always to pursue. While it might be tricky to balance a part-time work with a main job, it’ll definitely provide a great reflection on your career priorities as it’ll remind you of what you love about your primary work. Starting a part-time job involves a lot of solo hours, and your time alone will surely make you appreciate the camaraderie of colleagues even more.

  1. Make Some Small Changes

Oftentimes, it only takes some small changes to refresh your outlook on your job. If things are starting to get stale, think about what changes you can do to freshen up your routine or your workspace. One small change that you can do is to alter your work schedule. If you usually work from nine to five, ask your boss if you can shift to a later or earlier start time. Another way is to ask to be relocated to a different area in the office to start fresh and get a new perspective on things.

When your love for your job starts running short, take time to reflect on where you were before you had this job and why you wanted it in the first place. Oftentimes, contemplating on how far you’ve come is already enough to reset your interest and make you love your work again.
